Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy

Chicken fried steak with gravy

Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy is a classic and comforting Southern dish that combines crispy, golden breaded steak with a rich and creamy gravy.

This hearty meal starts with tenderized beef steak, often cube steak, which is dredged in a flavorful seasoned flour mixture,

dipped in a buttermilk or egg wash, and then coated again with the flour to create a thick, crunchy crust.

The steak is then fried to perfection in a hot skillet until the exterior is crispy and golden-brown while the inside remains juicy and tender.

Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy 🍽️🥩

Ingredients:

For the Chicken Fried Steak:

- 2 beef cube steaks (about 1/2 inch thick)

- 1 cup all-purpose flour

- 1 teaspoon garlic powder

- 1 teaspoon onion powder

- 1 teaspoon paprika

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 2 large eggs

- 1/4 cup milk

- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned)

- Vegetable oil for frying

For the Gravy:

- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

- 2 cups beef broth

- 1/2 cup milk

- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare the Chicken Fried Steak:

1. Begin by seasoning the cube steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.

2. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.

4. Place the breadcrumbs in a third shallow dish.

5. Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess.

6. Dip the floured steak into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.

7. Finally, coat the steak in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat with the remaining steaks.

Fry the Chicken Fried Steak:

8. In a large skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.

9. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the breaded steaks to the skillet. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

10. Remove the steaks from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Make the Gravy:

11. In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the 1/4 cup of flour to the remaining oil. Whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is lightly browned.

12. Gradually add the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to whisk until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

13. Stir in the milk and season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow to simmer for an additional 2 minutes.

Serve:

14. Place the chicken fried steak on a plate and generously ladle the gravy over the top.

15. Serve hot with your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes or green beans.
